Strong winds, heavy rains affect Galle

Thirty two houses were completely destroyed and over 865 households
partly devastated following the strong winds and heavy rains due to the
South-West monsoon activation since Friday in the Galle district, Galle
District Disaster Management Assistant Director Major L. D. Anakkage
said.
A number of fisheries boats launched from Balapitiya and Hikkaduwa
coastal areas were missing in sudden rough seas and two fishermen died
and five were reported missing. Bodies of two persons washed off to the
shores at Gintota and Balapitiya. The Navy Southern Command launched a
search operation for the missing fishermen.
A large number of business places, residences and government
institutions including schools in Galle city and suburbs were also
damaged. The roof of the three storied building of Galle St. Aloysius
College was blown away. Grade 6 classes will not be held today to effect
repairs, Principal D. P. L. S. Gunasekara said.
A large number of houses were damaged in Habaraduwa and Akmeemana
electorates in Galle. The electricity supply interrupted in many areas
of the district since June 7 was restored by Saturday night.
The Galle Municipal workers remove fallen trees across the
Baladhakasha Mawatha in Galle–Fort. Galle Deputy Mayor Kelum
Senavirathnee and a number of councilors were also present.
