Fifteen-year-old Vidyartha College schoolboy won a triple crown at
the third annual Butterfly all island ranking Table Tennis Championship
worked off at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Stadium in Mount Lavinia.
Udaya Ranasinghe displayed remarkable consistency in the three events
in which he participated and gave him the triple crown. Udaya Ranasinghe
first won the boys under 15 title defeating schoolmate Krishan
Wickremaratne in three straight sets.
His second title win was in the boys under 18 singles where he beat
schoolmate Tilina Wijesiri once again in three straight sets.
Then came the mens open singles and he was pitted against top seeded
and Sri Lanka mens team captain Rohan Sirisena of Sri Lanka Air Force.
He was in such spanking form despite playing in three finals the same
afternoon that he beat the experienced Rohan Sirisena in four straight
sets. The mens open singles saw Udaya Ranasinghe (6 wins), Rohan
Sirisena (6 wins), Nirmala Jayasinghe (4 wins), Indika Prasad (4 wins),
Sahaneka Ganegoda (2 wins), Dinesh Deshapriya (2 wins), K S P Chalitha
(4 wins) and Sajith Kavinda (no win) play in the quarter final stages
with Udaya Ranasinghe and Rohan Sirisena qualifying for the finals.
Ishara Madurangi of Sri Lanka Air Force maintained her top position
as the best in the championship for women by defeating 18-year-old
school girl from Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda Erandi Warusawitharne
4-1 in the finals to win the womens open singles championship.
Ishara Madurangi who was unbeaten in the tournament and had 7 wins
from the quarter final stage which played on a league basis. Erandi
Warusawitharne followed with 6 wins to qualify for the finals.
This means that Ishara Madurangi got the better of Erandi
Warusawitharne in the quarter final stage to remain unbeaten.
In the womens finals Ishara Madurangi won the first three sets but
received a set back in the fourth set which Erandi Warusawitharne won
11/6 but Ishara completed victory in the fifth set.Pesu Pestonjee –
Director Abans Limited who has done a lot to promote TT in the island
was the Chief Guest and he distributed the awards.
