Vidyaratna award for Sivarajah

A national award Vidyaratna has been awarded to Jaffna astrologer V A Sivarajah by Culture and the Arts Minister T B Ekanayake. During his 40 year career as an astrologer, he had won several local awards. He is the only astrologer who obtained the national awards in the North.

Ajith Mannapperuma takes oaths as MP

Ajith Mannapperuma took oaths as a Parliamentarian yesterday before Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa in Parliament. He was sworn in as a UNP MP for the seat that fell vacant by the demise of UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardena. Ajith Kumara Mannapperuma was a Western Provincial Councillor and Former Mayor of Gampaha.


Sister Muriel Soma Fernando passes away

Deputy Chief Sister of the Ceylon Pentecostal Mission Sister Muriel Soma Fernando has passed away on June 4. She was 91.She devotedly served the Mission for 70 years in many parts of the country.

Her funeral service will be held on June 6 at 1 pm at the Mission Headquarters, Rodrigo Place, Mattakkuliya and burial will take place at the Genaral Cemetry, Borella.


Fined for spitting

Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Thilina Gamage imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 when a driver pleaded guilty to the charge of spitting out of bus window after chewing betel.

The driver was produced before Court by the Police Special Unit in Colombo.
