Two girls die in mother's suicide bid

Two girls aged six and three died when their mother jumped into the Meeraoda lagoon in Walachchenei with the two girls on Monday morning. The mother is being treated at Baticaloa hospital.

Thavasellan Vilakshani, 6, and Thavaseelan Thanuja, 3, died in the incident. Villagers brought them ashore when they jumped into the lagoon and rushed them to Meeraoda hospital where the two girls were pronounced dead. The 30-year-old mother, a resident of Walachchenei had attempted to commit suicide after a family dispute, investigations revealed.

Errant driver arrested

The Wennappuwa police on Monday arrested a tipper truck driver who fled the scene after his vehicle hit a motorcycle head on and killed the driver at Bandirippuwa. W Sumith Thisera, 36, of Galawatte, Bandirippuwa died in the incident. The suspect was produced in Marawila magistrate court yesterday.

Nine hospitalized after wasp attack

Nine state workers, including a man were hospitalized after they were attacked by wasps in a tea estate in Nallatanniya on Monday evening. They were admitted to Maskeliya hospital. Nallatanniya Police are investigating.

Help identify body

Ja Ela Police seek public assistance to identify the body of a man found in an abandoned land near the Ja Ela railway station. The man appeared to be around 40 years old was 5'2" tall with a moustache. He was wearing a red checked shirt and brown trousers. The body was sent to Ragama hospital morgue.

Woman among alleged burglars

Baticaloa Police on Monday arrested a woman and two men in connection with a burglary.

They are alleged to have stolen Rs 450,000 worth jewelry after breaking into a house in Settukuda on Vesak Poya day. Police first arrested the woman and interrogation from her revealed information about the other two suspects. They were produced before the Baticaloa Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Guardian turns thief

The chief security officer of a private garment factory was arrested by Weeraketiya Police for allegedly stealing Rs 50,500 from the safe of the factory office.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had stolen a spare key of the safe from a cupboard in the accountant's office.

The surveillance camera had a footage of the suspect opening the safe with the spare key to steal the money. He was produced in Walasmulla Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Man held with heroin

Kotahena Police on Monday evening arrested a suspect with 15.30 grams of heroin in his possession in Maligawatte. He was produced before Maligakanda Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Woman dies in trishaw mishap

A 44-year-old woman, seriously injured, when she was thrown out of a three wheeler, succumbed to her injuries at Colombo National Hospital on Monday. She was identified as H A Leelawathie of Polwatte, Ehaliyagoda. The incident occurred when she was travelling in the three wheeler on the Eheliyagodawatte road on the previous day.

She was rushed to Eheliyagoda hospital with sever head injuries and transferred to Awissawella hospital and later to National Hospital. Eheliyagoda Police arrested the driver of the three wheeler.

Drowned youth's body found

The body of a 19-year-old youth who drowned in the Dehiatta Amuna tank in Welimada on Sunday evening, was found a day after. J P Sumith Nilanga of Hingurugamuwa faced the mishap while bathing in the tank with friends. Welimada Police conducted investigations.
