University Games 2013:

Ruhuna volleyball champs

University of Ruhuna emerged men’s volleyball champions when they overcame Sabaragamuwa University by 4-3 in the final played at the National Youth Services Council courts yesterday. Sabaragamuwa won the first set by 25-19 but Ruhuna won three straight sets ( 25-18,25-19,25-20 ) to grab the championship.

Meanwhile University of Sri Jayawardenapura defeated University of Visual and Performing Arts by 3-0 ( 25-20,25-19,25-23 ) at the same venue and secured third place in the men’s volleyball.

UoK bag women’s volleyball title

University of Kelaniya (UoK) grabbed the women’s volleyball championship when they defeated University of Sri Jayawardenapura by 3-1 in the finals workded off at NYSC indoor courts yesterday. UoSJP won the first set by 25-15 but Kelaniya strongly came back to the game and won the three consecutive sets. ( 25-18,25-23,25-12 )

It was a close competition for the third place between hosts Moratuwa and University of Colombo on the same day where the latter secured the third place by winning the last three sets.

UoM won the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-23. In the third set UoC easily defeated UoM by 25-9 and then the other set by 25-19. The last set ended at 15-9 in favour of UoC.

UoM beat UoC in cricket

A fine bowling performance including a hat-trick by N V Gunathilaka ( 4 for 43 ) and W A R P Perera (3 for 29 ) of UoM helped them to restrict UoC to 128 for 8 to win the final by 37 runs according to Parabola system, after a gloomy day where the final was restricted for 39 overs at UoM grounds.

UoM having put into to bat first made 206 for 8 in 39 overs while UoC struggled at 128 for 8 in 28.3 overs when the umpires called the match off due to bad weather.

UoC dominate swimming pool

On Tuesday , University of Colombo emerged the overall champions in swimming while University of Peradeniya and University of Ruhuna secured second and third places respectively when the event worked off at UoSJP swimming pool.

How ever UoSJP won the men’s first place with 144 points while UoC who collected 67 points were placed second. UoM secured the third place with 60 points.

In the women’s category UoC collected 113 points to win the first place and UoP with 59 points were awarded the second place while UoR with 44 points on the table were placed third.

UoM meet UoC in baseball final

Univeristy of Moratuwa qualified for the Baseball finals when they defeated UoSJP by 18-6 at UoM grounds.

They will vie for suprimacy with UoC who secured thier birth in the finals when they overcame UoP by 12-2 at the same venue in the second semi final.

In the consolation final UoP overcame UoSJP by 13-8 to win the third place. The final will be held on May 11 at UoM grounds.
