Nurses are the hospitality of the hospital - Carrie Latet Lady clad
in white
Dear children,
All of us want to be in good health throughout our lives. No one ever
wants to fall sick and get hospitalized. But the truth is as living
beings we cannot avoid sicknesses.
What if any of your family members had to be admitted to a hospital
to take treatment for some kind of illness? Doctors are there to
diagnose what his/her ailment is and prescribe treatment. And who would
attend to your loved one during his/her stay in the hospital?
Hope you know of whom I am talking about. The lady clad in white who
visits the patient to give medicine prescribed by the doctor. She is
called the Nurse. In fact she does a great deal to make the patient’s
stay in hospital comfortable and it is indeed a great relief for a
patient to have a kind-hearted and pleasant nurse looking after him/her
when he/she is going through a difficult time.
In honour of the great services rendered by nurses throughout the
globe, International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12 every year.
Though the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day
since 1965, it was in January, 1974 that May 12 was chosen to celebrate
the International Nurses Day coinciding with the birth anniversary of
Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Over the years
International Nurses Day has been celebrated under different themes. The
theme of the International Nursing Day 2013 is “Closing the Gap:
Millennium Development Goals.”
The services of nurses have to be recognized by everyone and it is
the duty and responsibility of every nurse to be kind and pleasant to
patients who need her assistance. It gives the patient a great deal of
mental strength during difficult times.
Great Minds
Novelist, Editor, Critic and Courageous Fighter
Piyadasa Sirisena:
He believed in the power of the spoken and the written word. He
wielded the Sinhala language in such a way, he struck blows that were
more powerful than the blows from a sword. Thousands of readers enjoyed
his articles in the Sinhalese Newspaper, Sinhala Jatiya, as well as his
numerous novels. Hailed as the father of the Sinhala novel, Piyadasa
Sirisena was also a courageous fighter who tried to save our culture
from westernised practices like gambling, animal slaughter and
consumption of alcohol.
Born on August 31, 1875, in the village of Anguruwella near Induruwa,
he was called Pediris Silva by his parents. After listening to Anagarika
Dharmapala, at a meeting, when he was sixteen years old, he had decided
to change his name from Pedris Silva to Piyadasa Sirisena.
He started contributing poems to the newspaper, Sithumina in 1895,
and through the contacts he developed with the editor of this newspaper
found employment in a furniture shop in Colombo. Having got the
opportunity to move to the city, he soon found work as an
assistant-editor of the Sithumina journal, and later became a deputy
editor of Sarasavi Sandaresa.
It was in the Sandaresa that the first chapter of his first novel,
Vasanavantha Vivahaya Jayatissa ha Roslin appeared on December 27, 1904.
Till his death on May 22, 1945, he published 20 novels, eleven poetry
books and four books on general topics. He also worked at eleven
newspapers and journals.
Jayatissa ha Roslin was published as a book in 1906, and by 1916,
25,000 copies had been printed. The series of detective stories he wrote
with the detective Kongoda Wickramapala as the hero, was also highly
successful. Though his novels were popular, Piyadasa Sirisena did not
write for the sake of writing or with the intention of pleasing the
readers. He believed Art was for the benefit of mankind and tried to
teach moral lessons through his novels.
It is said that other Sinhala novelists of his time followed in his
footsteps when they first wrote their novels, including Martin
Wickramasinghe, who himself had admitted that he imitated the Piyadasa
Sirisena novels when he wrote his first story, Leela.
Even though he was known mostly as a novelist, Piyadasa Sirisena was
also a poet. His first published book was a collection of poems called,
Owadan Mutuwela. He continued to write poetry, even in his novels, using
them effectively in the novel to convey moral lessons to the readers.
After the Sinala-Muslim riots in 1915 he was sent to prison and spent
60 days in prison along with F R Senanayake, D S Senanayake, D B
Jayatilleke and several others. Never a one to waste his time, he wrote
Maha Kapi Jatakaya and Ashtaloka Dharma Chakraya within the confines of
the prison walls.
He passed away on May 22, 1946 at the age of seventy one. He was one
of the national heroes of the 20th century who (to quote from an article
published in a newspaper called The Ahinsa, in August 1950) “shaped our
society so that we may rise as a people with a proud past, a living
present, and a glorious future.”
Rainforests
Rainforests are very useful to all living things because they provide
food, medicinal plants and useful forest products. Rainforests are
useful to nature too, as they help maintain a regular rain fall. They
produce oxygen. They are home to many animals, birds and reptiles. They
protect many rare trees. Rainforests control floods, drought and
erosions. They purify the air and beautify nature. Rainforests are
located in South and Central America, Africa and in islands around
Australia and Asia.
The rainforest located in Sri Lanka is Sinharaja. It is about 9000
hectares in extent. It is the habitat for many animals, birds, reptiles,
insects, butterflies and trees. Sinharaja rainforest is the first
national heritage in Sri Lanka. Some heartless people are destroying
this priceless gift. Loggers cut down trees. People pollute this
rainforest by throwing polythene. Hunters kill animals. So we must take
steps to conserve this valuable gift of mother nature. We must protect
this rainforest for our future generation.
