Table toppers Trinity take on Wesley tomorrow
Hafiz Marikar
Tomorrow, Trinity College who are on top of the schools “A” division
points table, will be rarin’ to exhibit their rugby skills and assert
their superiority in no uncertain terms when they play Wesley College,
which game will kick off at 4.30 pm at Longden Place.
The prevous time that these two schools met was in 2011. Last year
they were in two different divisions and could not play each other. In
2011 Trinity won by 48 points to 11.
Trinity College, after wining the league title last year after two
and half decades, a few weeks after their winning the plum, were knocked
out of the top position, and had to be content with the number two spot.
This time too, they are capable of doing well, if they play as a
team.
Wesley College this season are in peak form, enjoying one of their
best seasons. Rahul de Silva the captain has inspired them to great
heights with a different style of leadership. He will be the player to
watch on Friday. Wesley have only suffered one loss to Royal College by
12-31.
In tomorrow's game Trinity led by Halique Wadood should play a much
greater role in attack.
But if it so happens and the forwards win the ball A bad lapse by
Wesley back S.M. Rajasngham cost them a goal just before the short
whistle. Ken de Joodt, taking a penalty awarded against Wesley for a off
side could not get the ball over but Rajasingham, collecting from behind
the line did not touch down in defence, and when tackled by Trintian,
Ken de Joodt crossed over to score, he himself added the extra points.
After the break, Trinity controlled the game, with Ken de Joodt and
Sena Silva combining beautifully, to make holes in the Wesley defence
and scored three more tries through Sena Silva (two) and G.Roles. Ken de
Joodt converted all. The last a very difficult kick and also put over a
penalty, which was awarded against Wesley for putting the ball into the
second row in asset scrum. In the first half Trinity found scoring
difficult owing to the plucky display by Wesley, players such as S.M.
Rajasingham and N.R. Perera. B.S.Perera gave a good display.
However in the second half Trinity got going due to some good rugby
from Uvais Odayar, Nimal Maralande, Ken De Joodt, Denzil Kobbekaduwa, P.
Buultjens, R.Hermen and H. Godigama. Due to the good work by these
ruggeirte, they scored as they liked. At half time Trinity led 11-00.
Dr. C.O. Foenander refereed.
So tomorrow's game will be chockful of interest and as to who will
win, your guess is good as mine.
