Special security plan for New Year season

Police have launched a special programme to ensure security to people converging on main cities and towns to purchase goods and other needs for the New Year season. This includes enhanced mobile patrols and deploying motor cycle and vehicle squads at strategic points to offer quick response to emergencies and the deployment of personnel in mufti to protect consumers from pickpockets and other fraudsters and racketeers said Police Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena.

He said under this programme drawn up on the instructions of the IGP, enhanced Police teams have also been positioned in specially identified spots. Special teams in civvies have also been deployed to track road fiends and drunken drivers who pose a threat to pedestrians and other road users.

Action wouldalso be taken against road users who flout road rules, including jay walkers and bus crews stopping at unauthorised places along the road.

Police request the public to request their endeavour by keeping vigilant about their own safety when entering shopping malls and other crowded places.
