Geocycle starts Municipal Solid Waste Management from Katunayake,
Seeduwa UC
Industrial waste specialist celebrates 10 decades of greening the
environment by moving industrial waste management into municipal waste
management.
Every day citizens of Colombo and the suburbs generate tones of
garbage: half of which lies uncollected, and rest of it which gets
dumped into lands causing severe issues each year, including unsanitary
conditions, and health problems.
Geocycle, the waste specialist, whose specialized in managing
industrial wastes has now stepped in to provide a sustainable solution
for such Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) generated in the country.

Commemorating its 10th year celebrations, the wholly owned waste
management business unit of Holcim Lanka Limited, the nation's leading
supplier of cement and related services, will be establishing a model
MSW management plant at the Katunayake-Seeduwa Urban Council area under
a Private-Public Partnership concept in collaboration with the Urban
Council of Katunayake-Seeduwa.
As such, the main objectives of the project will entail a complete
solution for MSW in an environmental responsible manner, along with job
creation for community through capacity building and training.
The Geocycle has planned to set up a waste management center for the
purpose of material segregation, where separated biodegradable waste
will be composting, recyclable wastes will be diverted appropriately and
non-recyclable wastes will be sent for co-processing at Puttalum cement
plant.
The proposed plant will therefore include a material receiving
center, a segregation bed, composting area and even a specified area for
pilot engineered land filling (which is part of the site). The project
has been carried out in collaboration with Urban Council of Katunayaka
Seeduwa, along with the blessings of Ministry of Environment, the Local
Government, Western Province Chief Ministry and the Central
Environmental Authority of Sri Lanka and was ceremoniously launched by
Susil Premjayanth, Minister for Environment and Renewable Energy, at an
event held at Water's Edge recently.
Commemorating its 10th year celebrations, this is the first of many
events and activities planned by Geocycle for the year, including an
International Conference for Waste Management 'Towards Waste Free Sri
Lanka', in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment & Renewable
Energy and the Chamber of Commerce, and a CEO's Forum including a panel
discussion with eminent professionals from the industry which are to
follow.
By addressing many waste management challenges faced by the
industrial community, Geocycle is proud to serve the country's drive for
development through its services.
From its inception in Sri Lanka on March, 22, 2003, Geocycle has
disposed more than 300,000Mt of waste volumes in environmental
responsible manner, waste that would unless otherwise have been a burden
to the environment.
Having expanded its horizons gradually from non-hazardous wastes to
hazardous wastes, the Company continues its drive to offer peace of mind
to the industrial community ensuring that there will be no future
environmental liabilities from the waste they generate, because tomorrow
matters to all of us.
Geocycle further extended its capacity for providing additional
services to its customers such as collection and transportation, branded
product disposal, analytical services, total services solutions and
consultancy services recently.
