BACK DOWN? NOT THIS
PRESIDENT
Sri Lanka ’s position is
clear. The U.N Human Rights Council resolution was intrusive,
and moreover was bad for the U.N system. More of this agenda
driven behaviour, said Sri Lanka’s envoy to the 22nd UNHRC
sessions, would result in the UNHRC facing the same fate as the
now defunct UN Human Rights Commission that preceded it.
There was nothing new happening in Geneva of course. It was a
campaign of vilification that was organized subtly as a human
rights oversight effort for the protection of the Sri Lankan
people. In short, this was a repetition of 2012.
India played a dual role, being both sympathetic to Sri
Lanka’s cause while being against Sri Lanka’s cause, and this
piece of acrobatic contortionism had to be carried out mainly
due to domestic political compulsions for which there must be a
measure of empathy expressed towards the hapless Indians.
It cannot be forgotten that Geneva 2012 and 2013 was a well
organized campaign to make Sri Lanka pay for eliminating the
terrorist Prabhakaran and his band of despicable brigands.
It is recalled that when the humanitarian operation for the
rescue of civilians held hostage by the LTTE took place, and
when the Prabhakaran was holed out in a thin strip of land in
the Mullaithivu district, we were already being told by the
Jehan Pereras here and their clones abroad that if there is a
continued effort to rescue the civilians, the regime will
eventually face charges of having intentionally inflicted
civilian casualties.
How did these people who cautioned the Sri Lankan regime know
the shape of the future?
It is for the simple reason that there was an organized,
premeditated plan B, which was to cede the territory that the
LTTE wanted to carve out as a separate state from the rest of
the contiguous Sri Lankan land mass by other means, if
Prabhakaran was eliminated in May 2009.
The pundits tell us now that if certain things are done, such
as devolving power and implementing the LLRC recommendations in
full, the magic-bullet would have been found to stave off the
so-called international pressure on Sri Lanka, which of course
is not international pressure at all but a political campaign
led by the resource hungry power bloc that buys political
allegiances among U.N member states.
The fact that the country is constantly advised that there is
a magic-bullet that will silence the self appointed global
sentinels is a sign that the end-game is not to ensure human
rights, but to drive the Sri Lankan domestic political agenda
from outside our shores, to deliver what could not be achieved
by the LTTE by means of war.
If there is a respectable and credible call by these global
forces, so named, to push Sri Lanka towards an independent war
crimes investigation, how is it that there is a magic-bullet in
the form of implementing the 13th amendment, that will stave of
all ‘international’ pressures?
It’s a clear indication as any that this campaign has nothing
to do with war crimes investigations.
One thing is certain. Sri Lanka’s friends have been the
no-nonsense types of allies that are needed when the doctrine of
Might is Right operates against one country. Some of the local
and international know-it-alls writing on the U.S sponsored
resolution are busy giving out the impression that Sri Lanka has
been playing truant, and has been severely rapped on the
knuckles by the well behaved boys of the global club of nations.
If that was to be believed, China would have to be considered
a potty little satrapy in the global scheme of things – and
Russia, worse. Obviously, the majority of humanity is on Sri
Lanka’s side here, if numbers were to be counted beginning from
the fact that every one in four persons on this planet is a
Chinese.
It will take far more than petty skullduggery and pipsqueak
comment and analysis to get THIS President of this country, to
back down. One thing is certain -- he is not about to hand over
Eelam for which the blood of our warriors was spilt, because
some resource hungry neo-liberals and neo-cons want it to
happen. Neither will he ever compromise the very same gallant
men and women, who fought to keep his country, this country --
our country -- in one piece. |
