Intel empowers teachers across Sri Lanka

Crossing yet another milestone in its efforts towards the effective integration of technology into the country’s education system, Intel Sri Lanka, together with the Ministry of Education has successfully introduced the Intel Teach Programme in the North Central Province, thereby taking this programme to all nine provinces in the country.

Intel is engaged in several initiatives to encourage the use of ICT in education including the Intel Teach Programme in Sri Lanka. This was accomplished with the recent launch of Intel Teach Leadership Forum for Education Ministry officials in Anuradhapura. Commenting on the programe, Minister of Education, Bandula Gunewardena said, “Our teachers are the architects of the next generation and ensuring that they receive the right training has been one of our key focus areas. Working with us as a trusted advisor and partner, Intel has helped train over 25,000 teachers and with the introduction of the programme to the North Central Province, educators island-wide are now geared to take IT to even the most rural areas of the country. I would like to thank Intel for their support and look forward to continuing our work with them.”

Commending the Ministry of Education’s efforts, Anura Dissanayake, Additional Secretary to the President’s Office said, “By working with thought, leaders such as Intel, the Ministry of Education has transformed the state of ICT education in the country. With Intel Teach Programme, teacher professional development now being available in all nine provinces, teachers across the country would be able to effectively use technology in a classroom environment.”

Intel Teach relies on a combination of online and face-to-face instructions to build a more flexible course offering and train teachers around the world. Working with national, regional and local educators and governments in more than 70 countries, it is the largest and most successful programme of its kind. Now in its second decade, more than 300 million students have been prepared to learn, lead and succeed by over 10 million teachers trained in Intel Teach according to Intel’s estimates.

Commenting on this milestone, Indika de Zoysa, Country Business Manager, Intel EM Limited, Sri Lanka Liaison office said, “For over a decade, the Intel Teach Programme has been helping school teachers around the world to understand how, when, and where to bring technology tools and resources into their classrooms. We are glad to have been able to make this training available to our local teachers. Introduced to Sri Lanka in 2006, the program me has touched the lives of over 800,000 students across the island.
