The Co-operatives and Internal Trade Ministry yesterday setup the
hotline 1977 to provide the exact wholesale and retail prices of
vegetables and fruits 24 hours a day for consumers and farmers.
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando launched
the hotline at the BMICH yesterday to mark World Consumer Day.
The minister said the hotline was introduced for consumers, traders
and farmers to know the buying and selling prices of vegetables and
fruits at Dedicated Economic Centers (DECs) islandwide.
Fernando said through the hotline, consumers, traders and farmers can
obtain price details including wholesale and retail prices of vegetables
and fruits at DECs islandwide.
Consumers will be able to know daily, the exact prices of vegetables
and fruits available at DECs and information and news on consumer
awareness. The hotline also has facilities to lodge complaints 24 hours
a day.
Meanwhile, farmers will be able to obtain wholesale and retail prices
of vegetables and fruits at DECs countrywide. The hotline also provides
agricultural instruction, awareness and agricultural news for farmers.
This will also enable farmers in remote areas to know the exact
prices of their crops at DECs.
Minister Fernando said the opposition will also be able to know the
exact prices of vegetables and fruits in the market before making
allegations of price increase.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene said consumers have a
right to obtain maximum benefits for their money while farmers also have
a right to obtain reasonable prices for their crops. |
