Sustainability: meeting today’s needs
Ruwan HARISCHANDRA
Sustainability is a word that is widely used in many fields nowadays.
It defines as follows in the Oxford dictionary of environment (2007) “A
concept that is used to describe community and economic development in
terms of meeting the needs of the present compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their needs.
Being a nation of moving towards the fast economical growth we have
to pay much more attention to the concept of sustainability. The time
has reached to think about it. Flood ruins the life of the people in
various places in Sri Lanka. We report the deaths and damages. Raise
funds to help the victims. Then the saga is over. But we did not think
what the cause was. Once again environmental issues have come to the
platform. We need green buildings and many more. We may think of
disasters. How do we face them? We need many more plans. We request that
should be done. Are there any green professionals in Sri Lanka to
implement the concept of sustainability?
The green building council of Sri Lanka takes initiative to train the
professionals in Sri Lanka for green. There was one training session
conducted on January 11 this year at Hecter Kobbekaduwa Agrarian
Research and Training Institute.
The first time in the history the concept of sustainability is widely
talked in the field of development. “This course is designed to train
industry professionals to perform as green professionals who could lead
transformation of the construction industry in Sri Lanka with green
building practices to ensure the future wellbeing of our planet,” said
the Executive Director of the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka,
Lionel Nawagamuwa. "Those who are successful at the case study and the
examination will be awarded with the certification GBSL Associated
professionals," he added.
The next session will be held in April and now the applications are
called for the second programme. The limited number of candidates will
be selected for the second session also.
