ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY

Yesterday this newspaper spotlighted on front page, the Daily Express correspondent here in Colombo noting that the big guns that made much noise about Sri Lanka’s alleged ‘human rights record' didn’t make any mention about the country when it was time to make their delegations’ opening remarks at the UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva.

Britain, Germany, England – even India, desisted from making any negative remarks on Sri Lanka, and kept a studious silence.

This speaks volumes for the credibility factor of the NGO and diaspora led Tiger rump lobby. The German delegation apparently said that the criticism of Navi Pillay was unfair, but other than that there was no indictment on this country’s rights record by the Germans either.

This is the beginning no doubt of the end for the Tamil diaspora’s pet project of ensnaring the Sri Lankan regime on a rights related investigation and eventually bringing it down in a hail of global and internal protests.

Obviously the top European-powers realized that Sri Lanka is not an Arab Spring case, and that the fusillade of criticism aimed against the country is counter-productive to the very credibility of international organizations, and the governing establishments of their countries that endorse such misplaced campaigns.

In the final analysis there is little governments can do but to fall in line with the general global assessment of a country, which is the consensus opinion – and not the opinion of a few leaders of a certain restricted club of nations only.

In Sri Lanka’s case, the country’s credentials are firmly on the ascendant in terms of trade relations with nations from China to India to Germany and France. This gives the lie to the NGO refrain that there is some kind of chronic governance problem in the country.

It is difficult to ignore a country’s Chambers of Commerce, or a country’s business forum leaders -- and Germany’s businessmen and those of France no doubt prevailed upon the leaderships of these countries to refrain from risking bourgeoning trade relations with this country.

As much as this country needs European markets, the economic powerhouses of Europe are conscious about Sri Lanka’s strategic placement, and the placement of harbours etc., which make this an important territory in terms for global trade etc.,

More importantly, it is difficult to keep a good country and a good leadership down. The Tamil diaspora lobbyists for instance and their handmaidens have essentially buried their case, with their constant ham-handed overreaching on Sri Lanka.

Everything that has been orchestrated by the lobbyists of the diaspora and their bought and paid for INGO hands and of course the Callums etc., of Channel 4 reputation, has been of such dubious character that it is an embarrassment for anybody to take these people seriously.

The Channel 4 movie in short is such a badly concocted embarrassment that though people may talk about it in public, they will not touch it with a bargepole when it comes to serious discussions. This is why the U.N. was quick to disassociate itself from this sham, seamy, sensationalistic production.

In this same way the sex accusations against the Sri Lanka army etc., are so tainted with the by-association negative imagery that is tied to the pro Tiger lobby that people cringe, sometimes literally, when these allegations are trotted out by the likes of Rudrakumaran, Emmanuel, Poobalasingham etc.,

Sri Lanka is singularly fortunate in having a set of enemies that need no special discrediting, because they have already been discredited by long association with that ghoul Prabhakaran’s fascist terror movement.

In other words, nobody wants to be taken for a ride by a bunch of monsters again, though in polite society the lies these people state via the agency of organizations such as Channel 4 are not shot down immediately because there is a staid superficiality about polite society.

But eventually, the truth cannot be suppressed, when the truth is so obvious and the difference between the right side -- the Sri Lankan forces and leadership backed by her people – and the dark side -- the odious LTTE rump -- is contrasted. People feel that difference at the level of the gut.

HRW and blatant lies

Human Rights Watch (HRW) which has published a pack of diabolical lies against Sri Lanka and its Security Forces timed to coincide with the current United Nations Human Rights sessions, has been roundly condemned and criticized by its founder and former chairman Robert L. Bernstein, national governments, and the media.

Big power politics flush UN Charter down the toilet

Of all the human rights issues in global conflict and post-conflict zones why is India, EU and USA focused relentlessly -- and, more importantly, selectively -- on Sri Lanka? What is behind their persistent and the holier-than-thou obsession to hunt Sri Lanka with a vengeance? Is it pursued to fulfill the aims and objective of a higher morality, or the principles of the UN Charter, or a Mosesian legal code?
