Errant traders face the music

Matara District Secretariat Office Consumer Affairs Authority officials arrested 20 errant traders and produced them before Matara Additional magistrate Dulani Amarasinhe who fined them Rs 134,000.

The traders had sold and displayed items unsuitable for human consumption, some had not displayed price boards, sold items without the dates of manufacture and expiry and sold battery chargers and computer appliances without warranty certificates.

On the instructions of Matara District Secretary W K K Athukorala, a team of officials headed by CAA Matara District Coordinator Laksman Rathnayake made the detection and prosecuted.
