Police arrest hit and run drunk driver

A drunken van driver who fled the scene after knocking down three persons on a push cycle at Kandawala, Katana on January 22 afternoon was arrested by the Negombo police while he was having a bath in a neighbours house after parking the damaged ‘Batta’ van in a garden near his house.

Of the three injured Gilbert Mark Fernando (65) and his granddaughter Sithmi Natasha (12) succumbed to their injuries while the third Savindi Navarthana (8) was transferred to the Colombo National hospital in a critical condition. Gilbert had been taking his two granddaughters back home on his push cycle after tuition classes when the accident occurred.

Sithmi and Savindi were students of Vidyalankara Vidyalaya, Negombo.

Negombo Police are investigating.
