The death occurred of Premalatha Malalasekera, wife of senior Lake
House journalist Sarath Malalasekera and mother of Daily News Design
Editor Saman Malalasekera.
The body lies at No. 69, Mahinda Dharmarama Road (off Baseline Road),
Colombo 9.
The cremation takes place at the General Cemetery, Borella today (23)
at 5 pm.
Court documents go missing

The Crime Investigation Unit is conducting investigations pertaining
to certain missing court documents belonging to the Panadura Magistrate
Court.
These documents relate to pending law suits.
The documents were stored in the record-room in the Panadura Courts.
The missing documents relate to law suits over several crimes, traffic
offences etc.
A female employee attached to the record-room was taken into custody
in this connection.
Rat fever warning

There is the possibility of rat fever raising its head again after
the floods, Health Services Director of Hambantota Dr Suranga Dolamulla
said.
He said farmers working in paddy fields are the worst affected as a
result of rat fever, as it was the paddy fields that are haunted by
rats.
Dr Dolamulla said the urine of rat is the main reason for the spread
of rat fever. “Children playing in abandoned paddy fields can also get
affected,” he said. He said if a person has high fever, he must get his
blood tested after three days. Dr Dolamulla also warned the public of
dengue fever, urging the public to take immediate treatment if they are
suffering from dengue.
Museum in Hambantota

A museum will be set up at the Hambantota District Secretariat
building where the District Secretariat is functioning. Artefacts,
monuments and objects of archaeological value and objects of arts, dance
and cultural items pertaining to the Hambantota district will be
exhibited here.
The District Secretariat functioning here will be shifted to the new
administration complex.
Power for village

One hundred and ninety-eight families in Kukulaapola on the
Padiyathalaava-Mahiyanganaya road were provided electricity under the
government’s electricity distribution extension programme, Vidulamu Sri
Lanka.
Rs 25,180,000 was allocated for this project.
Museum in memory of Aranthalava bhikkhus

A project to build a museum in memory of the bhikkhus massacred by
the LTTE was launched at Aranthalava on the Ampara-Mahiyanganaya road on
January 18.
Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, co-ordinating the Deyata Kiriula
Exhibition was chief guest at the ceremony organised by the Buddhist
Centre of Aranthalava.
A group of bhikkhus on their way to a religious ceremony were killed
by the LTTE in Aranthalava on July 2, 1987.
Aid for fishermen

A group of fishermen and fish vendors in Mahiyanganaya received aid
from the government.
This included fishing nets, bicycles, boxes to carry fish and kiosks.
The Uva Provincial Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment and Tourism
Ministry organised this programme.
Grama Niladhari in meritorious act

A grama niladhari has organised a learning aid distribution programme
for children of low income earning families in his locality in
collaboration with philanthropists.
A group of children received exercise books, pens and pencils among
other things.
Divisional Secretary, Minipe, S D Nagahatenna, participating in the
ceremony to distribute the items, said the people of Ate Ela were
fortunate to have a government official like grama niladhari Sunil
Ekanayaka.
Nagahatenna said government officials at rural level can do a lot for
the well being of the people.
Nayaka Thera passes away
Ven Wanduramba Anomadassi Nayaka Thera, the Vice Adhikarana
Sanghanayaka of Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts of Malwatte
Chapter passed away on January 19.
Cremation takes place at 3 pm today at the Urala Vidyala Sports
grounds. Ven Wanduramba Anomadassi Nayaka Thera who was 75 at the time
of his passing away entered the Sasana on February 23, 1956 under the
tutorship of late Ven Welivitiye Sri Saranatissa Nayaka Thera.

Dr Kosala de Silva will deliver a talk in English on 'How we see the
world' at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday,

Youth Parliament

The final session of the Youth Parliament conducted by the National
Youth Services Council will be held on January 23 and 24 at the Sri
Lanka Youth Centre, Maharagama.
The special guest for the final session will be Opposition Leader
Ranil Wickremesinghe, who will deliver a lecture on the topic. "The
protection of democracy in the country is the main responsibility of the
Opposition."
Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma,
Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake, Secretary to the Ministry K A
Thilakaratne and National Youth Services Council Chairman and Director
General Attorney-at-Law Lalith Piyum Perera also willgrace the occasion.
New Campfire Facility to Dharmaraja College
The Scout Campfire Circle, of Lake View Park International Scout
Centre especially designed and constructed for scouting activities of
the 1st Kandy scouts is sponsored by 91 Group Old Boys of Dharmaraja
College will be opened on January 26, at the Lake View Park
International Scout Centre, Kandy. This will be conducted in parallel to
the Scout Leaders Special Course on Campfires to be held at Dharmaraja
College from January 25 to 27.
This is a special project of Centenary Celebrations of 1st Kandy
Dharmaraja Scout Group and 125th Anniversary Celebration of Dharmaraja
College. Meanwhile, the Dharmaraja Archive will open a special corner
specifically for 1st Kandy Dharmaraja Scout Group. The Archives will
open specially for the use of participants at the RISGO Jamboree from
February 17 to 22.
Death of S A D Sugathadasa
S A D Sugathadasa, formerly of the Ministry of Education passed away.
He was 93. He is the father of Major General Prasad Samarasinghe former
Military Spokesman. Funeral will take place at 5 pm at the General
Cemetery, Borella tomorrow. Remains are lying at No.12, Siripa Road,
Thimbirigasyaya. |
