Dignity and safety of women should be ensured - WUF
Athapattu Bandara
The dignity and safety of women should be ensured ,states the Women's
United Front (WUF), which is affiliated to the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna
in a press release. The statement was in response to the beheading of
Sri Lankan house maid Rizaana Nafeek's in Saudi Arabia.
"It was Rizanaa's poverty which compelled her to go for employment in
the Middle East. She left the island even changing her birth date. She
was duped to go for foreign employment by people who were bent on making
a fast buck, the WUF release adds. "It is a well known fact that
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and and some Government Ministers called on
the Saudi Arabian King to seek his support in getting Rizana Nafeek
released," it states.
"Sri Lankan housemaids who go abroad for employment should be
protected and more stringent rules and regulations be introduced to
safeguard their dignity and guarantee their safety," the release further
states.
