Books for students

Two hundred students were presented exercise books and equipment by the Akkaraipattu Division Rural Development Society in Akkaraipattu at Latheefiya Mosque Auditorium recently.

Books and equipment worth Rs 400 were presented to students of poor families.

RDS treasurer Y B Nizar presided.

Acting rural development officer, Ampara district M T Nahib, District Youth Service officer A G A Gaffoor, Grama Niladhari S M Junaideen, and Society Secretary M S M Najeeb participated.


Mayor observes Akkaraipattu development progress

Akkaraipattu Municipal Council Mayor Athaulla Ahamed Zackie visited Town Division 13 in the Akkaraipattu DS Division to observe the progress of the development programme recently.

Members S M Safees, N M Najimudeen and K L M Zarook, municipal commissioner A L M Azmi, municipal engineer A M A Hakeem, municipal secretary M I A Lattif and officials accompanied the Mayor.

The Mayor listened to the public’s grievances and observed shortcomings in the area.


Wild bear threat

Villagers of Ranmuduwewa, Suriyawewa are living in fear of a wild bear seen roaming in the village.

The Grama Niladhari brought this to the notice of Suriyawewa Divisional Secretary N K R Pathirana who informed the Hambantota Wildlife office. Pathirana said wildlife officers are taking steps to chase the bear to the Yala National park.


Aid for the poor

Social worker K Pathiranage distributed dried food parcels among low income families in Habaraduwa to mark his 60th birthday.

It was organised by Pathiranage's son, Dinil Iroshan.


Opening ceremony

The Group of Lyceum International Schools will open the eighth school branch at No. 6/393, Lake Road, Stage 1, Anuradhapura on at 7.30 am today. This is Lyceum's first branch school in the Northern Central Province.

Snatch thief gets just deserts

A snatch thief who realised too late that the chain he snatched was an imitation, returned the stolen article only to be assaulted by the public at the instance of the owner and handed over to the Police. The owner was a woman employed at the Biyagama FTZ.

The suspect had tried to return the chain to the woman when he realised it was an imitation. The outraged woman immediately called out to the neighbours who set upon the suspect.

The suspect aged 49, is a native of of Kurunegala.


Two electrocuted

An elderly person and a nine - year - old boy were electrocuted in Ramboda, Kotmale on Monday. The incident occurred while they were trying to obtain electricity from their house to a vegetable plot, the Police said. Kotmale Police are investigating.
