Mini tornado damages 35 houses in Galle

About 35 houses in Pitiduwa and Lanumodara Grama Niladhari Divisions of Habaraduwa, Galle were partly damaged, while one was completely destroyed following a mini tornado that swept the area on Sunday evening, Habaraduwa Divisional Secretary Ayesha Gunathilake Kariyawasam said.

She said compensation would be paid once Disaster Management Ministry approval was granted.

Kariyawasam said she instructed Grama Niladharies to prepare a comprehensive report on the damages caused to homes and crops which would be submitted to the ministry for official authorisation.

"Owners of houses, whose monthly income is below Rs 3,000, would be entitled to compensation," the Divisional Secretary said.

No casualties were reported.
