Two more spectacles manufacturing factories coming up

The Health Ministry will establish two new spectacles manufacturing
factories affiliated to the Jaffna and Karapitiya Teaching Hospitals,

Two spectacles manufacturing factories affiliated to the Colombo
National Eye Hospital and Kandy Teaching Hospitals, are already
operating.
Around 34,000 spectacles have been manufactured here and distributed
among people from low income families who are visually impaired, he
said.
“All programmes are being implemented under Vision 2020. We hope to
increase the annual production of spectacles to 100,000 with the
assistance of all four spectacles manufacturing companies, ” Dr
Maheepala said.
He expressed these ideas during an inspection tour of the spectacles
manufacturing factory attached to the Colombo National Eye Hospital
yesterday.
Over 160,000 children and 150,000 adults are visually impaired while
over 450,000 schoolchildren have poor vision. Vision 2020 is implemented
to treat these persons and operate patients with cataract.
Assistance is provided for lens transplant operations for patients of
low income families, Dr Maheepala said.
