Colombo to be made a multi-faceted city

The city of Colombo is being developed and improved so as to cater to all modern day requirements and as a residential hub and a focal point of investment and tourism, Defence and Urban Development Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said.

He was addressing the gathering after launching the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Website yesterday at the Colombo Municipal Council auditorium.

The services provided by the CMC and other details are available on the website which can be logged on through www.cmc.lk web address. During the event, a booklet written on the historic milestones of the Colombo city under the theme "Colombo Updates 1965-2005" was launched. The Defence Secretary said Colombo city is being developed as a joint effort since the city symbolises an overall picture of the country.

Therefore, the Colombo city will be developed as one of the most modern cities in the world. Moreover, the development of the Colombo city can be used as a catalyst for the development of the entire country, he said. He further said that moves are under way to solve the issues arising from population density, housing, sanitation etc. in the city of Colombo.

It is the duty of everyone to work towards bringing the Colombo city to the aspired levels. The Defence Secretary noted that the government has allocated Rs 15 billion for infrastructure development and other development oriented activities for the Colombo city. Under this programme, 10,000 houses are being constructed for shanty dwellers. The project is nearing completion and more houses will be constructed after the completion of the on going housing project.

"As the ultimate target, the Colombo city will be made to shine as one of the most attractive cities in the world", the Secretary said. CMC Mayor AJM Muzammil said the CMC is working in close collaboration with the government to develop the Colombo city and through this effort transform the whole country. The

CMC was established in 1865 with to facilitate and develop the Colombo city. The Mayor highly appreciated the unstinted support and cooperation extended by Defence and Urban Development Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in the development of the Colombo city.
