Sri Lanka Armoured Corps marks 57th anniversary today
The Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), one of the most widely acclaimed
pioneering regiments in the Army, marks its 57th anniversary today. The
SLAC has produced four former Army Commanders, including the incumbent
one and military veterans, like the late Lieutenant General Denzil
Kobbekaduwa, Secretaries to the Defence Ministry, Chiefs of Staff,
Commandants of Army Volunteer Forces, Northern and Eastern Commanders,
directors, military attaches, etc.
A series of commemorative anniversary arrangements have been launched
after religious ceremonies and wreath-laying at the SLAC monument, got
under way during the first week of December.
The opening of the new archway entrance at Modera SLAC Regimental
Headquarters, new Officers Mess building on Wednesday by the Defence
Secretary and other new projects epitomise the 57th anniversary
milestone of the SLAC Regiment.
SLAC with its motto, ‘Whither the fates call’ saw its birth as the
First Cavalry Regiment of the Army, 1st Reconnaissance Regiment.
On October 10, 1955, Armour commenced its journey after Ceylon
