Ape bites man

A man who tried to chase away an ape that had been gobbling meals
inside the kitchen and damaging kitchen utensils, was bitten by the ape
and admitted to Nawalapitiya District General Hospital. The incident
occurred in the Imboolpitiya Colony, Nawalapitiya.
Worthy cause

The Sri Pushpadana Society of Kandy launched a project to save the
lives of cattle being brought for slaughter. Sakisanda Madala, a stage
drama will be held at Dharmaraja College on December 21 in aid of the
movement.
Educational exhibition
An educational exhibition and trade fair, Siri Piyaratana Viduhal
Navodaya, organized by the students of Padukka Siri Piyaratana Vidyalaya
will be held at the Padukka Pradeshiya Sabha playground from December 26
to 30.
The proceeds of the exhibition will be directed to the Suwa Sevana
housing project of the schoolchildren of low income families
Workshop
A workshop for provincial correspondents of the Ampara District to
coincide with the Deyata Kirula development work, will be held at Ampara
Monty Guest House Auditorium today at 8.30 a.m.
The workshop organized jointly by the Sri Lanka Press Council and
Ampara District Secretariat will be inaugurate by District Secretary
Neil de Alwis.
Sixty eight areas face landslide threat

Sixty eight locations of the Central Province have been identified as
landslide prone areas, according to a research made by the National
Research Organization.
The Landslide Prevention Unit has taken steps to launch a landslide
minimizing project covering the Matale, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla
district in the first stage.
Meanwhile, environmental organizations said environmental destruction
has influenced landslides.
Errant traders fined

Two traders found guilty of selling substandard goods, were fined Rs.
25,000 by Naula Acting Magistrate Wasantha Ariyaratna.
They were indicted for displaying and selling of substandard sweets
and coconut oil.
Naula Public Health Inspector Bandula Harishchandra prosecuted.
Seventeen projects completed in Weligepola

Seventeen infrastructural development projects in rural areas in the
Weligepola Divisional Secretariat area under Sabaragamuwa Arunalak
programme have been completed, said Divisional Secretary H.M.H. Bandara.
The Economic Development Ministry spent Rs. 750,000 for the projects.
Youth knocked down

A youth who walked along the Kandalama road, was knocked down by a
motorcycle.
The victim was admitted to Dambulla Base Hospital under critical
condition. The injured was identified as Dhammika Sanath Ekanayaka, 26,
a resident of Vihara junction, Dambulla.
The motorcycle and the rider were taken into custody by the Dambulla
Police.
NCP to expand ambulance service

The North Central Provincial Health and Indigenous Medicine Ministry
will step up the ambulance service in the province by adding another 40
vehicles to the fleet. There are 38 ambulances assigned to hospitals in
the province, some of which are over 15 years old, said Provincial
Health and Indigenous Minister H B Semasinghe adding that his Ministry
has drawn up a programme to mark the National Health Week from December
10 to 17.
Road developed

the Theeniyagala-Madolwatte Road in the Ambagamuwa Divisional
Secretariat division has been constructed by the Ambagamuwa Divisional
Secretariat under the one project for one village programme. The
Economic Development Ministry funded Rs. one million for this.
Snow White on December 16
The students of Wendy Whatmore Academy of Speech and Drama,
Udahamulla branch, will stage Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the
Bishop's College Auditorium on December 16 at 5pm.
Students of different age groups will perform.
The drama is conducted under the guidance of teacher-in-charge of
Wendy Whatmore Academy of Speech and Drama, Udahamulla branch Dulari
Wijesundera.
Four books with CDs written by Wijesundera will be launched at the
same venue on the same day. It will be held under the patronage of
writer Sybil Wettasinghe.
Display of Sri Lanka's seascapes
A special evening to view and understand the significance of a
display of Sri Lanka's seascapes and marine biodiversity photographed by
top nature photographers will be held at Casa Serena Gallery, Havelock
Road, Colombo 5 on December 17 from 6pm to 7.30pm.
