The government has released a part of the buffer stock of paddy
stored in Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) granaries to the market from
Thursday, to cater to consumer requirements for the festive season.
"We maintain a buffer stock of paddy to be released to the market,
during times of shortage or to be used in emergency situations,"
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando told the
Daily News.
"Therefore, we have decided to release a certain stock of paddy at
concessionary rates for the festive season," he said.
"Sufficient stocks of paddy will be released from the buffer stocks
maintained at the PMB stores islandwide to meet the consumer demand," he
said.
"This move will help stabilize rice prices in the local market,
enabling consumers to make their purchases at concessionary rates," the
minister said. |
