Coconut to be grown in religious lands

The Ampara office of the Coconut Development Board has drawn-up plans
to co-operate with local religious places, in the growing of coconut.
Distribution of coconut plants among temples, kovils, churches and
mosques will be a major feature of this plan.
The Coconut Development Board will implement the plan as part of the
Deyata Kirula Exhibition programme for 2013.
Railways earn 6 m in fines

Sri Lanka Railways have earned over Rs. 6,763,078 by way of fines
through mobile raids and operations conducted during the last nine
months of this year. According to Commercial Superintendent Sisira
Kumara, a total 9,715 mobile inspections were done during this period
covering the Colombo, Nawalapitiya and Anuradhapura railway zones in the
island.
Farmers benefit from mobile clinics

Over 700 peasants from the Medayaaya Gramaniladhari Division in the
Maapaakadaveva area, off Mahiyanganaya have benefited by a mobile oral,
dental and cancer clinic held by the MOH office of Mahiyanganaya last
Thursday in collaboration with the Mahiyanganaya base hospital.
MOH (Dr.) P. K. Dharmapriya said field officers attached to his
office have arranged a series of mobile clinics to be held throughout
the Mahiyanganaya area as a gesture of solidarity with the National
Dental Diseases and Cancer Prevention Programme.
The two clinics had been arranged by Public Health Inspectors (PHIs)
for Haddeththava and Medayaaya. E. D. P. Edirisingha and A. M. A. S.
Abeysekara had organised the clinics under the guidance of the MOH
(Medical Officer of Health) in Mahiyanganaya.
Mother drowns while attempting to save son

A mother of three aged 4, 8 and 11 drowned in a public well close to
her house together with her 14-year-old son in a desperate attempt to
save her son from drowning in the same well last Saturday.
P. K. Kanthi (39) of Eddunkelewatte, Ahangama in Galle on hearing
something dropping into the public well close to her house rushed there
and noticed her son struggling in the well. The woman had jumped into
the well and save her son from drowning but failed.
The inquests were held by the Ahangama Inquirer Into Sudden Deaths
followed by the judicial medical inquest, conducted by JMO L.B.M.
Fernando of the Forensic Department of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital who
returned a verdict of deaths due suffocation resulted from drowning.
Woman buried in earthslip

A woman was buried in her own residence at Eddunkelewatte, Wanchawela
in Akmeemana Pradeshiya Sabha area in Galle when her house was crushed
by an earthslip due torrential rains early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as M. L. Gayani Chaturi (26), an employee
of the Cooperative Department. Chatur had been cooking in the kitchen
while other members of her family were away when the accident occurred.
The post mortem was to be held yesterday evening.

Community organisations to get tough with drunkards

Four community organisations in Dehiaththakandiya will take action
against those behaving indecently under the influence of liquor at
funerals in the colony.
The office-bearers of the 'Mahaweli' colony of Maavanaagama, off
Sandunpura, Dehiaththakandiyathe capital of the Mahaweli Zone C said
they will impose a Rs 250 fine on a person behaving indecently under the
influence of liquor at a funeral.
They said this was decided at a meeting of the organisations. |
