President opens Attanagalla Bhikku Training Centre
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday declared open the newly built
Bhikku Training Centre at the ancient Attanagalla Rajamaha Viharaya
premises.
The centre which will provide residential training to Buddhist Monks
is been named as the Pathiraja Bhikku Training Centre.
The President after opening the facility met the chief incumbent of
the temple Ven Dr. Pannila Sri Ananada Nayaka Thera. The Thera on the
occasion invoked blessings on the President whilst chanting pirith.
Later President Rajapaksa also joined a function organized by the
Viharaya to award Scholarships to 380 needy students of the area. The
President later participated in an alms giving ceremony for 150 Bhikku’s,
organized to mark the opening of a three storeyed Sanghawasa(living
quarters) and a Dana Shalawa for the Pathiraja Pirivena.
The ceremonies were held under the auspices of Malwathu Chapter
Anunayaka Ven Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Thera and Kelaniya University
Chancellor Ven. Dr.Velamitiyawe Sri Kusaladhamma Thera.
A large number of members of the Maha Sangha participated. Deputy
Ministers Lasantha Alagiyawanne, Sarana Gunewardene were also present.
President Rajapaksa also paid a surprise visit to small outlets which
sell pineapple at Imbulgoda on the Colombo - Kandy main road.
The President spent time with the pineapple sellers and people of the
area, whilst looking into their needs and issues. He also enjoyed a dish
of pineapple which was offered to him. |
