One of the quintuplets dies

One of the quintuplets born to Dilini Shyamanth at the Kandy General
Hospital three days ago , died yesterday morning.
The five infants were kept in an incubator immediately after birth
and were later transferred to the Peradeniya and Sirimavo Bandaranaike
Children Hospital.
Lightning deaths 42

Forty two persons died after being struck by lightning upto October
this year, a spokesman for the Meteorological Department said.
Of them, seven deaths occurred in October, he said.
Twenty deaths were reported in April, the month which experienced
acute thunder and lightning during the year.
Fifty two deaths due to electrocution caused by lightning was
recorded last year.

The National Drugs Provision Operation Unit functioning under the
Presidential Secretariat, has organized a series of awareness programmes
on harmful effects on the use of narcotics.
Indian factory workers on strike

A group of Indian workers employed in an iron factory managed by
Indians in Madampe, is on strike over pay cuts imposed by the management
and other grievances. The factory which converts old iron by smelting to
new iron, employs 230 Indian nationals and also some local workers.
Fifty nine Indian workers are on strike since October 12.
Costly cigars

A man of Dangala, Morawaka, found guilty of possessing four ganja
cigars, was fined Rs 8,000 by Morawaka District Judge Kusalani Ayodya.
Morawaka Police prosecuted.
Kidney disease on the rise

Two hundred patients suffering from kidney disease have registered
with the Galgamuwa Nikawewa rural hospital kidney treatment unit over
the last nine months. Hospital sources said measures have been taken to
create public awareness on the possible causes of kidney disease and
preventive measures to be taken.
Road developed

The Pitawala-Geekiyanagedera road in the Ambagamuwa Divisional
Secretariat Division, has been renovated by the Ambagamuwa divisional
secretariat under the one project for one village programme.
The Economic Development Ministry funded Rs one million for this. The
Dehigastenna-Kanduregoda road was also developed by the Ambagamuwa
divisional secretariat. Rs one million funded by the Economic
Development Ministry was spent for this. Meanwhile, the
Laxapana-Katakithula road in Ambagamuwa is in a state of disrepair.
Vocational training for differently-abled

Physically handicapped people in the Central Province, will be
enlisted for a Vocational Training course, under the patronage of the
Social Service Department for Pottery, Wood Craft Weaving of Cane
associated work and brass work. |
