Obama, Romney take debate into overtime

President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney stoked the embers of their smoldering debate as they campaigned through fiercely contested territory less than three weeks before the election. Hitting the campaign trail on Wednesday -- a day after one of the most contentious presidential face-offs in history -- the two candidates sought the support of women voters and independents who could decide the November 6 vote.

Amnesty International hit with strike over job losses

Amnesty International, the body which defends human rights around the world, faced protests from its own staff on Wednesday as they went on strike over a dispute about redundancies. Members of Unite, Britain’s largest trade union, who work at Amnesty’s global headquarters in London, organised a 24-hour walkout over a planned restructuring programme that could lead to dozens of job losses.

Pakistani girl stable in UK hospital as support floods in

The 14-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban was in a stable condition in a British hospital on Wednesday as well-wishers from around the world left her messages of support. Doctors said Malala Yousafzai spent a second comfortable night at the highly specialised Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, which is accustomed to treating British soldiers wounded in Afghanistan.

US army contractor in hot water over Afghan video

A private security company working for the US government in Afghanistan is in hot water after a video surfaced allegedly showing several of its employees drunk and on drugs, US broadcaster ABC reported Wednesday.
