Over 6,000 shuttlers for Junior Championships

The 42nd AVI Junior National Badminton Championships 2012 will be
held from October 2 to 8 at St Thomas’ College, D S Senanayake College
and Royal College Sports Complex .

The tournament which commenced with 6100 junior shuttlers, a record
number of participants this year completed its preliminary selections at
district and zonal levels at 20 centres island wide.
There will be singles and doubles in the age categories from under
11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 boys’ and girls’. The under 19 shuttlers will be
in action in mixed doubles as well.
This year too the event is organized by the Sri Lanka Schools
Badminton Association ( SLSBA ) in conjunction with the Sri Lanka
Badminton Association ( SLBA ) and sponsored by D Samson and Sons Pvt (
Ltd ).
The grand opening ceremony will be held on October 2 at 9am at St
Thomas’ sports complex, Mount Lavinia while all the finals in each age
category have been scheduled at Royal College Sports Complex on October
8 commencing at 9am.
The under 11 and 13 matches for girls and boys will be held in St
Thomas’ College sports complex. Under 15 matches for both age categories
will be held in D S Senanayake College while Royal College Sports
Complex will be the venue for under 17 and 19 girls and boys encounters.
At a press conference held recently at the Gymkhana Club auditorium
to announce the commencement of this year’s tournament , the SLBA
president Parakkrama Basnayake said that the association was very much
delighted to see such a large number of juniors have taken part in the
tournament this year.
He also noted that Niluka Karunaratne’s London Olympic participation
has been a key factor in attracting more and more players to badminton.
No doubt there has been a tremendous motivation due to the
international recognition gained by Sri Lankan badminton players ,
including Niluka Karunaratne , he added.
The tournament referee , Samanthi Navaratne said that the seeding has
been done according to the recognized and standard methods which was
also fair and transparent. SLSBA secretary Saman Wijesinghe said that
this year tournament will be both competitive and much standardized one. |
