Galle district doctors call off strike action
Mahinda .P. Liyanage - Galle Daily News Corr
The strike action launched by Galle district branch of Government
Medical Officers' Association throughout the district's hospitals and
medical institutions demanding the arrest of Galle Mayor upon a
complaint made by the Municipal Medical Officer of Health to the Galle
Police was called off with immediate effect following Police legal
clarifications over the disputed matter.
The Galle Municipal MOH had lodged a complaint to the Galle Police
alleging that Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva had obstructed him from
carrying out official duties by threatening him using offensive language
for which the Galle Police had carried out an inquiry.
The mayor in response to the Police interrogations had made a
statement denying the allegations made by the MOH.
Accordingly the Police had referred the case to the Galle Fort
Gravets Mediation Board.
However, the members of the GMOA who were discontent over the Police
investigations resorted to strike action demanding the arrest of the
mayor. Consequently after several failed discussions with the Police,
the GMOA, last Saturday agreed with the Police course of action
regarding the Galle Municipal MOH's complaint. |
