Three-storied building for science
medical institute
A three storied building for a Science Medical Institute was opened
by the Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake on September 28 in
Jaffna. The Dubai government donated Rs 65 million for this building. A
unit for scientific medical research was functioning outside the Jaffna
university Medical Faculty. The opening of this building will facilitate
the medical students to do their studies in a separate building. The
Jaffna university Vice Chancellor presided at the opening ceremony. The
special guest was Higher Education Deputy Minister Nandamithra Ekanayake.
The Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr Jayantha Navaratne and
Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas
Devananda participated in the opening ceremony.
Injured man dies after two days
A person who went to open the gate to take his bus out at 4.00 am
accidentally slipped into a well beside the gate. His head banged
against the inner structure of the well and he was critically injured.
He was rushed to Jaffna hospital and treated for two days. He succumbed
to his injuries at the hospital.
He was identified as Kathiravel Rajendra of Keerimalai road
Sithankerny.
Murder accused sentenced
The accused in Thinavely Milk Board road murder case has been found
guilty by Jaffna High Court Judge J Visvanathan and sentenced to two
years' rigorous imprisonment suspended for five years and fined Rs
5,000. He was further ordered to pay Rs 30,000 as compensation to his
wife.
In this case Rajadurai Rajakulendran was indicted with the murder of
Semasundaram Selvakumar of Thinavely by stabbing him with a knife.
Statues robbed
Rs 500,000 worth of statues have been stolen from Kandavalai
Panangkaddi Pillaiyar kovil in Kilinochchi. The ancient statues of
Pillaiyar Murugan and Ambal had been robbed after breaking the door of
the temple. The statues were made of bronze and each of them weighed 150
kilograms. This temple was rehabilitated recently after the resettlement
of displaced people and the Kumbabishekam (consecration ceremony) was
held at great expense. |
