Minister Mervyn to set up special fund to assist places of religious worship

Public Relations and Public Affairs Minister Mervyn Silva said he would set up a special fund on electoral basis to assist places of religious worship belonging to all faiths in the Gampaha district.

He disclosed this when he distributed Rs 5.15 million among temples, churches and mosques in the district on September 18 and 19.

A total of 103 places of worship received financial assistance under this programme on these two days, a press release issued by the Public Relations and Public Affairs Ministry said yesterday.

A sum of Rs 1.65 million has been already distributed among 33 places of worship in the Kelaniya electorate under this programme.

Assistance provided under this programme so far totalled Rs 6.8 million. The programme will be extended to cover places of worship in Negombo, Divulapitiya and Minuwangoda electorates shortly.
