Children should not tamper with strange objects, warn Police

The Police Public Relations Unit request parents and teachers to educate children to keep away and not to tamper with objects found in the Northern and Eastern Provinces which might be ordnance and explosives.

The Police made the request as several persons, including children were killed and many critically injured following explosions of objects found in the North and the East in the recent past.

"If anyone, specially children, find an object which they cannot recognise, they should keep away from it and alert parents or any other adult.

"Calling 119 is also a good option. It is extremely dangerous to examine, tamper or carry them as they might explode at any time," Police said.

"In most incidents, explosions occurred when children tampered with abandoned ordnances or while trying to inspect them." Recently two children, aged 17 and 15, from Puliankulama died while three others were injured when they were inspecting an object they found.

The floating object in the shallow seas subsequently exploded. The Army and other de-mining teams have cleared the populated areas, but, there might be some undetected ordnances left behind by terrorists.
