Names of elected members to be Gazetted today

Names of all successful candidates at the Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provincial Council elections will be gazetted today, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said.

The list of the elected candidates will be gazetted subsequent to the names being handed over to the Elections Commissioner through the respective District Returning Officers. Also the names of those who obtained bonus seats in the three Provincial Councils will be forwarded to the Elections Commissioner today for inclusion in the gazette notification, by the General Secretaries of the parties. The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) obtained a notable victory at the Provincial Council polls in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provinces.

According to the results released by the Department of Elections, in the Eastern Province the UPFA emerged the largest single party with 14 seats while ITAK, which is part of the Tamil National Alliance was second with 11 seats.

In the Sabaragamuwa Province, the UPFA secured 28 seats whilst the main Opposition United National Party (UNP) came second with 14 seats. In the North Central Province, the UPFA secured 21 seats while the UNP obtained 11 seats.
