Prof. E.O.E. Pereira - father figure in real sense

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), the apex body for the engineering profession in the country, will commemorate the 105th birth anniversary of the late Professor E.O.E Pereira with a memorial lecture at the Institution’s headquarters at 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7, tomorrow September 13, 2012 at 5.15 p.m.. This year’s memorial lecture will be on 'Challenges Facing Public Universities in Sri Lanka' to be delivered by Eng. (Dr) Nihal Somaratna, Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya.

NCP kidney disease - thinking outside the box

Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origins, known as CKDU has presented itself as a baffling health problem with serious socio-economic implications. CKDU is most prevalent in the North-Central (Uthuru-Maeda) and Uva provinces. It has been investigated for at least a decade, and various theories have been presented. The use of pesticides and fertilizers, consumption of contaminated drinking water, and even the use of Aluminum cooking pots have been included in the gallery of rogues.

The Human Dimension

In search of men of integrity...

Recently I had the pleasure of reading up in the Sinhala print media on two men of the previous generation - men who had lived by a code of integrity and honesty. They were ordinary people from everyday, not celebrities but men who had lived their lives the old fashioned way. The stories were not the kind of news making, ground breaking tales but they made me sit down and think - these men belonged to a generation or two before us. They lived by a different way of living. They still believed in good old -fashioned values and principles. One of them was a man who had lost his job in the famous July strike in 1980.
