Case on animal sacrifice dismissed

Chilaw Magistrate and District Judge Jagath Kahandagama yesterday
dismissed case (No 722/12) filed by Chilaw Police seeking a stay order
prohibiting an animal sacrifice ceremony at the Munneswaram Kali Kovil.
The judge in his order stated that Court had no Jurisdiction to issue
orders prohibiting animal sacrifices. Chilaw Police filed the case on
September 6 following a complaint by Ven Omare Kashyapa Thera, General
Secretary Thunhela Jathika Viyaparaya.
Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, PC who appeared for the plaintiff said the
kovil had not obtained permission from the Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha to
conduct animal sacrifices.
Body found
A body of a 58 years old, was found inside a car at a lane in
Havelock place yesterday, a spokesman for the Police media unit said.
He was identified as a resident of Borellasgamuwa. He was on the
driver’s seat at the time of death. The cause of the death was not
revealed. No physical injuries were found of the body. The body was sent
to the Colombo General hospital.
Ananda Ranga Sara Soba
The annual concert of Kotte Ananda Balika Vidyalaya will be held at
the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre today at 5 pm under the
patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. The event choreographed by
the school Aesthetics Education Division will take place under the
guidance of principal M. Wickramarachchi.
Buddhist talk
Mallika Karunaratne will deliver a public talk in English on
Sotapanna State at the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday at
4.30 pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Defence Secy feted
A group of parents attached to the Parents’ Association of Colombo
Devi Balika Vidyalaya thanked Defence and Urban Development Ministry
Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for intervening in a long standing problem
faced by the school due to a row of semi-permanent houses adjourning the
school wall.
They said the Defence Secretary’s intervention helped settle the
problem amicably by getting the occupants to move into temporary houses
until permanent houses are built for them elsewhere to facilitate the
demolition of the houses which caused security and sanitation problems
for the school.
