Ifthar at Mahabodhi Headquarters today

With a view of promoting inter - religious harmony and cooperation, thousands of Muslims will gather at the Mahabodhi Headquarters in Maligakanda this evening for Ifthar (break fast).

This event is organized by former Speaker M.H. Mohamed under the auspices of Ven Prof. Kamburugamuwe Vajira Thera and Ven Banagala Upatissa Thera.

Kalashuri Edwin Ariyadasa said the event is very significant, as Muslims are used to going to their religious places of worship to break fast during the month of Ramadan.


Dhamma discussion

A Dhamma discussion in English on the topic ‘Buddhist meditation - in theory and practice’ by Ven. Olande Ananda Thera (Pagoda Meditation Centre) organized by Siri Vajirayasdayaka Samithiya Bambalapitiya will be held at the Vajirama Temple library building on 8 from 7 pm to 8 pm at Vajira Road, Bambalapitiya, Colombo 4.Further details on telephone Nos. 259 2140, 0714-765774.


Public lecture

The American Center in celebration of International Youth Day presents a public lecture on Youth activism and ‘Reconciliation’ in Sri Lanka on August 9 at 4. 30 pm at the American Center Auditorium.

The speaker will be Jaffna University Department of Law lecturer Attorney-at-Law Kumaravadivel Guruparan.

The Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies Presents a public lecture on Poland’s Political and Economic Transformation In the Context of Transition in Central and Eastern Europe on August 10 from 5pm onwards.

Under Secretary of State for Oriental Policy of Poland Jerzy Pomianiwsky will deliver a lecture which will be followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) and Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS).


Book launch

Padya Sahithya, a literary book will be launched at a ceremony by the Cultural Affairs and Arts Ministry and State Literary Sub Board and with the patronage of Cultural Affairs and Arts Minister T B Ekanayake at the Public Library Services Board today at 3.00pm.

Prof Calo Fonseka, Prof Ananda Tissa Kumara, Prof Samantha Herath, Thilakarathna Kuruvita Bandara, Buddhadasa Galappaththi and Sunil Gunawardana will participate at the discussion, along with the book launching ceremony.


Death fall

An eight year old girl died after falling into an unprotected well near her house at Samayapuram, Vavuniya on Sunday.

The girl who went missing for some times was found in the well by the neighbors who took her out. L Vidusalani of Vavuniya was rushed to Vavuniya hospital.

She was confirmed dead on admission.


Estate pre school to be reconstructed

Measures are being taken by the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat to reconstruct the pre-school at Wanaraja Estate Dickoya in the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division in the Nuwara Eliya district.

Rs 200,000 has been allocated.
