Police nab 278 jay walkers
Police said 278 jaywalkers in Colombo were subjected to legal action
on Tuesday.
They will be required to be present in court and pay the Rs 1,000
fine.
The Police earlier warned the public to use pedestrian crossings in
Colombo and other cities as jaywalking has contributed to the increase
in the number of accidents and traffic jams.
Higher education programme for visually impaired

The Higher Education Student's Equipments Assistance Programme 2012
for the visually impaired students who have qualified for university
education, organised by Sri Lanka Council for the Blind will be held on

Dengue victims soar in Wayamba

Four dengue patients have died in the Kurunegala and Puttalam
districts so far this year, Provincial Director of Health R M S S K
Ratnayake said. Ratnayake addressing a conference at the Kurunegala
Kachcheri said 936 patients have been reported from the Kurunegala
district and 765 in Puttalam district.

Graduateship programme in Chemistry
The College of Chemical Sciences, which is the educational arm of the
Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, has commenced the registration of
students for the Graduateship Programme in Chemistry for the 35th
consecutive year.
Honorary Rector of the College Professor J. N. Oleap Fernando in a
media release states those with three advanced level passes (including
Chemistry) could not register at the lowest possible cost before July 31
which is the deadline for Advanced Registration.

Dr. Kosala de Silva will deliver a public talk in English on 'An
introduction to insight meditation' at the meeting of the Servants of

Body found

Hidogama Police found the body of a man of around 40 years lying on
the banks of the Malwathu Oya at Kithala, Thummodara on information
given by a resident in the area.
Police also found an empty bottle which had contained poison beside
the body. Investigations are continuing.
Fined for keeping illicit liquor

A man of Kolawenigama who was in possession of 750 millilitres of
illicit liquor was fined Rs 5,000 by Morawaka District Judge Dhammika
Hemapala.
Meanwhile, a person of Kotapola, who pleaded guilty of selling arrack
illegally was fined Rs 5,000 by the Morawaka District Judge.
Awareness on croc threats

Awareness programmes will be launched to educate the people of the
Hambantota district on the dangers posed by crocodiles by the district
disaster management unit.
Steps will also be taken to set up safety bathing places and display
precautionary boards.
Electricity project

The Paragala-Mahawila electrification scheme to be implemented will
supply electricity 44 houses in the area. Rs 13 million has been
allocated by the government for this.
Tank to be renovated

The Economic Development Ministy will renovate the Pahalawewe rural
tank in the Dambulla area under the Gemi Diriya Project.
The tank bund will be widened and the tank bed will be dredged.
After renovation, over 400 acres can be irrigated both Yala and Maha
seasons. Rs 5,000,000 has been allocated for this by the Economic
Development Ministry.
Pharmacies selling sedatives to youths

Galenbindunuwewa Police have received complaints that some pharmacies
in the Galenbindunuwewa town were selling sedative drugs and certain
types of syrups to youths in the area without doctors' prescription. It
has been revealed that these youths, mostly students, have been addicted
to these drugs and syrups.
Parents in their complaints to the Police has said that although it
is illegal for pharmacies to issue certain drugs without the doctors'
prescription, these pharmacies were working against the regulation.
They say that the youths who had fallen prey are acting in a strange
manner.
Teen drowns in Bentota sea

A 16 – year - old student of Aluthgama Maha Vidyalaya drowned in the
sea at Bentota yesterday.
Dulaj Fernando of Ganegama Road, Aluthgama was swimming near a hotel
at Bentota with a friend around noon yesterday when he faced the mishap.
The body was sent to the Elpitiya Hospital morgue for the post-
mortem.
Bentota Police are investigating. |
