Waliga Kota caught

The wild elephant nicknamed Waliga Kota, which terrorised people in
several villages in the Palagala Divisional Secretariat was caught by
Wildlife officials at Palagala- Hadagama Road on Sunday. Veterinary
surgeon Dr Chandana Jayaratne said the pachyderm had marks of nearly
50-60 gun shot injuries on its body.
Students off to India
The India Sri Lanka Foundation supports the visit of eight students
and two teachers from Richmond College, Galle to India to participate in
the Gateway Computer Tournament being organized by Montfort Sr.
Secondary School, New Delhi from July 23 to 29.
The Gateway computer tournament is an inter school competition.
The schools would initially compete in Quizzes, from which five
finalist schools will be selected to compete in various events such as
C++ Programming, Hardware Assembling, Crypto-analysis and Digital
Imaging. The competition aims to provide a platform to test the
e-knowledge of youth, and to offer them an opportunity to gain knowledge
of newest technology and to learn new skills.
Ministry Secretaries
Eric Illayapparachchi and K.A. Thilakaratne have been appointed
Secretaries of the Ministry of Child Development and Women Affairs and
Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development respectively by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, states a press release issued by the
President's Media division yesterday.

Police seek public assistance to trace the whereabouts of S A Datiya
Senadeera who is evading police arrest. The person is wanted in
connection with a number of money swindling cases. Public are requested

Amanda needs your help
Sixteen year old Amanda Tharindi Abeywickrema is a grade 11 student
of Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Matara. She has been diagnosed with
Scoliosis and has to undergo surgery to fully correct her spinal
deformity.
The cost of surgery at Appollo Hospitals in Chennai is IND Rs.
800,000 and includes the cost of spinal implants and nine days
hospitalization.
Her father, a clerk at a private institute is unable to meet the full
cost of the surgery. He has applied for financial assistance from the
President's Fund. Amanda would appreciate any financial assistance from
philanthropic institutes and the public. Her account number with Peoples

Light of Asia contest Prize–giving
The prize-giving of the annual “Light of Asia” contest conducted by
the Colombo YMBA will be held on July 21 at 3.00 p.m at the Main Hall
YMBA, Borella. The Chief Guest on the occasion will be Colombo
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Kahanika Hirimburegama who will give
away the prizes.
ICLP awards ceremony
The twentieth anniversary of the Institute for the Development of
Commercial Law and Practice and the ICLP award ceremony will be held at
