Holy Family Convent ‘A’ take under 14 netball title

Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala ‘A’ team, clinched the championship of the “Sisu Udana” Inter schools under 14 netball tournament and Sri Lanka Schools Netball Team won the under 21 netball championship of the “YES” netball tournament sponsored by Peoples Bank which concluded at Jayathillake Stadium, Nawalapitiya recently.

The event was organised by Sri Lanka Netball Interim Committee and conducted under the supervision of Sports Ministry The event was held representing all the provinces including North and East after three decades.

One of the most significant thing in the tournament was of Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala ‘A’ team beating their ‘B’ team in the final by 11 points to four ..

Holy Family Convent ‘A’ qualified for the finals by beating Sri Siddhartha College, Anuradhapura by 20 points to four and Holy Family Convent ‘B’ team entered the finals when they beat Viharamaha devi Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha by 13 points to four.

Best up and coming player in the under 14 tournament was Kareena Prabhavi of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya.The under 21 final between Sri Lanka Schools Netball team and Union College Jaffna ended in a 40 – 11 win for Sri Lanka Schools Netball team.

In the semi finals, Union College edged out Holy Family Convent ‘B’ team by 25 – 24 while the Sri Lanka Schools team beat Holy Family Convent ‘A’ in a thriller( 23 – 21). 21 teams took part in the tournament.Gimhani Gayanjali Amarawansa of Sri Lanka School awarded as the “ Netball Queen”

The well performed players in the YES trophy under 21 Netball tournament will be selected to national pool and the selection will be aimed for the national team to represent Sri Lanka in the Junior Netball World Championship which is scheduled to be held on 2013 at Scotland.

Best Shooter – Piyumi Ekanayake(Holy Family Convent)

Best Middle row player – A.M.S.Jayasundera (Eppawala College)

Best Keeper – Sanduni Sathya ( Holy Family Convent)

Best Up and Coming Player – Kareena Prabhavi (Viharamahadevi Balika)

Under 21

Best Shooter – M.Sivalingam ( Union College, Jaffna )

Best Middle row player – Thilini Sasikala ( Sri Lanka Schools team)

Best Keeper – Ishara Jayasundera ( Sri Lanka Schools)

Best Up and Coming Player – Dumindani Yashoda ( Sri Lanka Schools)

2012 Youth Netball Queen – Gimhani Gayanjali Amarawansa ( Sri Lanka Schools)
