Convocation ceremony of Vocational Technology University today
The maiden convocation ceremony of the Vocational Technology
University will be held at 5 pm today under the patronage of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa at the BMICH. Twenty six students who followed the
degree course and 338 students who followed the diploma course would be
conferred certificates on this occasion.
This university provides an opportunity for students to pursue higher
education based on vocational and technological skills. It is considered
a revolutionary move in the vocational education field and is operated
under the Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry.
The Vocational Technology University conducts over 14 courses related
to the vocational education sphere at present. Minister Dullas
Alahapperuma, Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake,Ministry Secretary K A
Thilakaratne, Vocational Technology University Chancellor Prof Dayantha
Wijesekara, Vice Chancellor Prof Kapila Gunasekara and many other guests
will participate in this event.
Abandoned infant to children's home

A nine month old infant girl left abandoned by her mother at a house
which provided them with overnight lodging at Manalgunduwa, Puttalam was
ordered to be handed over to the care of the Amila Children's Home,
Migalewa by Puttalam Magistrate Heshantha de Mel when the infant was
produced before him by Puttalam Police.
The magistrate also ordered the Police to trace the mother of the
infant and produce her in Court.
Fisheries harbour, a boon for fisherfolk

The Welipatanwila fisheries harbour at Ambalantota which was
developed at a cost of Rs 236 million has become a boon to the fisher
community in Hambantota district.
It consists of a net mending unit and all the facilities required for
a fisheries harbour except a filling station and an ice plant.
This fisheries harbour is being used by 300 residents and migratory
fisherfolk.
New Scout Association Commissioner
Professor Nimal de Silva has been appointed Chief Commissioner of the
Scout Association by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He is the 18th Chief Commissioner of the Association. He joined the
association from the Richmond College in Galle in 1953.
The appointment has been made by the President in terms of Section
2(1) (f) of the Sri Lanka Scout Council Act No 13 of 1957.
The newly appointed Chief Commissioner will assume duties at its
headquarters today.
