Attack on preacher's residence: five held

Five persons were arrested by the Wanduramba Police in connection with the attack on the residence of a preacher alleged to have advocated a doctrine distorting Buddhist teachings, and establishing and running a religious cult for a long time. The attack that took place Sunday night at Bulugahakanda, Urala, Wanduramba in Galle was so intense that the Police had to use tear gas to disperse the aggressive mob with the assistance of the Police Special Task force.

A vehicle damaged by the attack

Two Police officers were injured and admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. Five vehicles including two Police jeeps were damaged. Following a conference organised by the Galu Bodhu Pavura organisation, with the participation of Buddhists led by members of the Buddhist clergy, the participants had allegedly attacked the preacher.

The conference had discussed organisations that propagate misreading beliefs.

The situation has now returned to normal and the residence of the preacher is provided with Police security.
