Eleven underage couples arrested

Eleven courting couples misbehaving on the Tangalle beach were arrested by Tangalle Police during a raid. All the couples were found to be minors, Police said. Some couples were subsequently released after a stern warning and handed over to their parents. All were between the ages of 15 to 17.

Attack on preacher's residence: five held

Five persons were arrested by the Wanduramba Police in connection with the attack on the residence of a preacher alleged to have advocated a doctrine distorting Buddhist teachings, and establishing and running a religious cult for a long time. The attack that took place Sunday night at Bulugahakanda, Urala, Wanduramba in Galle was so intense that the Police had to use tear gas to disperse the aggressive mob with the assistance of the Police Special Task force.

Explosives recovered by Vavuniya Police

Vavuniya Police on Saturday recovered a large haul of explosives including 30 kgs of C4 high explosives and 329 kgs of C4 powder at Wellamullivaikkal. Police detected the stock of explosives hidden in the ground when they carried a search operation in the area. Meanwhile, Erawur Police after a search operation recovered five pressure bombs in a grassy area in Punnakuda on Sunday.
