The with adequate funding for Research and Development and move
forward. Speaking at a seminar on “Green Buildings for Green Economy,”
held at the Chamber of Commerce Colombo, Senior Professor, Department of
Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa , Prof. M. T. R. Jayasinghe
said.
He proposed this funding could be generated with initial Public
Offerings of investment companies set up with public private
partnerships with Rs. 20 to 30 billion raised every year over five
years.
He said professionals and entrepreneurs who are willing to break away
from traditions who think out of box are needed to proceed towards a
green economy which is the future for survival. The favorable climate
conditions of the country makes it an ideal candidate for green
buildings and green economy therefore it is necessary to take the
challenges head on and go for new techniques, designs, materials and
concepts starting with iconic projects .
Prof Jayasinghe said Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(
LEED) go hand in hand with a green economy and the a building recognized
by SLGBC (Green Building Certification) could easily upgraded to LEED
recognition. The Kandalama Hotel ,Chaya Bay Hotel, Brandix factory and
Hydramany factory are some of them. He said green economy has six main
themes which include renewable energy, green buildings, clean
transportation, water management, waste management and land management.
The seminar was organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Environmental
Professionals Association to mark the World Environment Day. |
