Mistaken shot kills farmer
A farmer died when he was shot while guarding a paddy field at 2 am
yesterday in Mahayana in Medirigiriya.
Police identified the victim as 28-year-old W A Amaradasa of Medagma,
Medirigiriya.
Investigations revealed that the victim was guarding a paddy field
with another farmer in a hut on a tree when he was shot on his head at
Godagewatte.
The other farmer said he woke up after hearing noises from an
elephant and shot at the elephant using a mortar gun when accidentally
the farmer had got shot.
Medirigiriya Police are investigating.
Nabbed with cannabis
Three people were arrested with 7.6 kgs of cannabis at track 6 in
Kuttigala on Monday.
They were produced before the Embilipitiya magistrate yesterday.
Kuttigala Police are investigating.
Foreigner nabbed with heroin
Four Foreigners, including two women and a child, were arrested with
300 grammes of heroin and 44 grammes of cocaine in the possession of one
of the suspects while staying in Sri Lanka without visa in Negombo on
Monday.
Eththukala Circuit Police made the arrest at Eththukala, Kattuwa
road, Negombo.
Negombo Police kept the suspects in detention for investigations.
Netted with sambhur meat
Lindula Police arrested three people with sambhur meat in the Horton
Plains forest reserve on Monday.
The suspects had poached the sambhur by entering the area illegally.
They were produced before the Nuwara Eliya magistrate yesterday.
House gutted, bank caught fire
A house in Grandpass caught fire and was completely destroyed Monday
night.
A kerosene oil lamp had accidentally rolled over and ignited the fire
in the house at State Pura, Police said. The flames were extinguished by
neighbours. No injuries were reported. Grandpass Police are
investigating.Meanwhile, the archives of the rural bank in Poojapitiya
have been destroyed after a fire in the bank on Monday morning.
Investigations revealed that the fire erupted in the generator room
where the files had been stored.
Police said that the generator caught fire when an employee tried to
switch it on. Katugastota Police are investigating.
Airmen remanded
An Air Force personnel who had been taken into custody with a 9 mm
automatic pistol and four bullets in his possession was remanded until
June 20 by the Polonnaruwa magistrate.
Police arrested the suspect at Patunagama in Pulasthipura on Sunday.
