Ice cream makes 28 sick

Twenty eight people who fell sick after eating ice cream were admitted to the Kalmunai hospital. It was served at a party in a house in Pandiruppu on Monday. Police said 13 men, five women and 10 children had fallen sick. An ice cream manufacturing shop in the area has been sealed by medical health officers after the incident.Kalmunai Police are investigating.
 


Mobile phone ban in Vavuniya schools

Vavuniya South Zone director Anton Somaraja has banned the use of mobile phones in schools.

Complaints of teachers and students using mobile phones during school hours have been made to the Zonal Director of Education by parents.


Seminar on development activities

A seminar organised by the Government Information Department to brief the press on the development activities launched by the government in the Northern Province will be held at the Mannar District Secretariat on June 16. Industries and Commerce Minister Rishard Badiudeen will preside.

Mannar District Secretary Sarath Raveendra, Mullaitivu District Secretary N Vedanayagam and Vavuniya District Secretary Bandula Harischandra will deliver special lectures.

Government Information Department Director General Prof Ariyaratne Athugala, Media Centre for National Development Director Ariya Rubasinghe, Government Information Department Additional Director General Chandrapala Liyanage and Information Director Wasantha Priya Ramanayake will also be present.


Funds for maternity centre

The government has allocated Rs. 4,000,000 to build a maternity centre in Bujjamuwa in the Alawwa Police area at the request of Kurunegala District Parliamentarian and SLFP organizer for Dambadeniya Shantha Bandara.


Bandarawela needs central bus stand

The lack of a central bus stand in the Bandarawela town is causing inconvenience to commuters in the region. There are five different bus stands in Bandarawela in an unsystematic manner.

Although there is a so-called bus stand near the UC grounds, buses to a limited number of destinations operate from it. Buses plying on the Colombo route are parked opposite the Railway station, while buses plying in the Badulla route park near the Dharma Vijiya Pirivena.


Errant drivers face the music

Eight persons who breached road rules while driving were apprehended by the Mahawela Police. They were fined Rs. 27,500 on being produced before Paldeniya Circuit Magistrate Rangani Gamage. Mahawela Police prosecuted.


Bus service for Vanni teachers

A special bus service for Vanni teachers began operating from the Jaffna bus stand on Monday. The bus leaves the stand at 6am daily and returns at 5pm.

The bus will drop teachers at school. The journey will restart at 3pm. Northern province education Ministry Secretary S Sathiyaseelan said teachers could obtain details of the bus service from the education zones.


Lyceum schools observe 19th anniversary

The 19th anniversary of Lyceum International Schools will be held under the theme, 'Lyceum - A Lighthouse of Knowledge,' on June 14 at 7.30 am at Lyceum School, Nugegoda.

Founder of Lyceum Schools, and Monitoring MP, Education Ministry, Mohan Lal Grero will be the Chief Guest.


Lectures

A series of lectures on fashion illustrations will be conducted by the Cats Designer Circle at Singer Mega, Duplication Road, Bambalapitiya (Next to St. Paul's girls school) on June 24 at 2.30 pm. Participants will be educated on fashion illustrations, fashion materials, international designs, latest garment fashions etc. lectures are conducted free by Dr. Athula Ranwala.


Public talk

Asoka Mahinda Jayasinghe will deliver a public talk in English on 'Detailed exposition of Right View and Wrong View' at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday 16 at 4.30 pm in Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Rahula Group of '96 get-together

The annual get-to-gether of Matara Rahula College Old Boys' Group of '96 will be held on June 16 at the Hemali Reception Hall, Walgama, Matara at 6.30pm. Old boys who sat for the O/L examination in 1993 are also invited.
