KOICA support to advance local governance

Western Province Education and Local Government Ministry Secretary
Chithra Jayanthi Wijethunga and 19 district and divisional
representatives of nine provinces from the Ministries of Public
Administration and Home Affairs, and Local Government and Provincial
Councils attended the training programme in Korea from May 13 to 26 as
part of the 2012 KOICA training programme.
This programme was specially designed to provide local government
officials with opportunities of obtaining knowledge on Korean economic
and rural development, new village movement, advancing good governance
in local governments, human development strategy of Korea's public
sector and strategies for transparency enhancement in the civil service
through theoretical lectures.
Under this training course, group discussions and presentations were
held to seek how to enhance administrative transparency in local
governance in Sri Lanka. In addition, participants were also able to go
on field trips and study visits to Korea's legislative and
administrative bodies such as the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights
Commission, National Assembly, Rural Development Administration and
National Election Commission as well as industrial sites such as Samsung
Electronics, POSCO and Hyundai Heavy Industries.
KOICA aims to support human resource development in Sri Lanka by
sharing Korea's experiences in order to support sustainable economic
development.
