SL bag two Golds and a Silver

Shiwanthi Kumari Ratnayake and R A Dulaj Madusanka won gold medals
for Sri Lanka when they won the men’s and women’s 400 metres events
respectively on the second day of 15 Asian Junior Athletic Championships
(AJAC) here at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.
Ratnayake became the first Lankan athlete to win a gold medal at the
15th edition of the games. She brought honour when she won the women’s
400 metres, clocking 55.91 seconds, ahead of India’s Priyanka Mondal who
finished the event in 56.01 seconds. Kazakhstan’s Olga Andreyeva
finished third, clocking 56.03 seconds ahead of Sri Lankan Nadeeshani
Henderson.
Madusanka bagged his gold medal when he finished the event in 47.36
seconds to secure the second gold medal for Sri Lanka. He was steady
since the start and seemed packed with full strength in the final 100
metres. Madusanka was qualified for the World Junior Athletics
Championship in Barcelona after clocking 47:75 seconds in Saturday’s
heat. Japan’s Kimura Kazushi who won the silver with a time of 47.53
seconds posed a good challenge for the race leader, but Madushanka never
slowed down until he crossed the finish line. Saudi Arabia’s Kaabi
Bandar Atiyah was place third, clocking 47.73 seconds.
Meanwhile Nimesha Siriwardena had to satisfy with the silver medal
although she cleared 1.79 metres, the equal height to gold medalist Wu
Meng- Chia of Chinese Taipei. China’s Liu Xiao Yun won the bronze medal
clearing a height of 1.76 metres.
Driouch Hamza of Qatar entered the meet record book finishing men’s
1500 metres in 3:39.85 seconds. He erased the previous record of another
Turkish, Abu Bakir Kamal who clocked 3:42.46 seconds in Singapore, 1999.
Teng Haining of China and Hairane Jamal of Qatar bagged silver and
bronze with a timing of 3: 43.00 and 3:48.11 seconds respectively.
Kyuma Haruka of Japan won the first gold medal of the 15 AJAC and set
up a new meet record in the women’s 5000 metres event clocking 16: 07.74
seconds. She erased Nami Matsuda’s ( Japan ) timing of 16:10.95 which
she recorded in 2006 in Macau.
Meanwhile Zhang Wei of China set up another record on the opening
day. It was men’s pole vault where Zhang rose to a height of 5.35 metres
to beat the previous record of 5.30 metres from another Chinese, Yang
Yansheng in 2010 in Macau.
