President meets Commonwealth Secretary General, members of the House
of Lords
Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma called on President
Mahinda Rajapaksa at his hotel on Tuesday afternoon.
During the briefing, the President briefed Sharma on the current
situation in Sri Lanka and its development process.
The Commonwealth Secretary General pledged his support and
cooperation to the President regarding the programmes carried out by him
on behalf of Commonwealth states.
President Rajapaksa also met a group of members of the British House
of Lords on Tuesday and during the meeting which lasted over three
hours, the President gave them a correct picture about the present
situation in Sri Lanka. The members of the House of Lords expressed
happiness about the President’s ability to defeat terrorism and restore
peace in Sri Lanka.
They said the strong development programmes undertaken by the Sri
Lankan government are most praiseworthy and promised support for the
programmes in the British Parliament. External Affairs Minister Prof G L
Peiris, Parliamentarians Sajin Vaas Gunewardene, Secretary to the
President Lalith Weeratunga, Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal
and Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Britain Dr Chris Nonis were also
present at, the discussion.
